Project title: A current review of the population status of Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus morio) in Danum Valley, Sabah using metabarcoding and gut microbial diversity-based approaches.

Syamimi obtained her first degree in Conservation Biology and holds a master’s degree in Ecological Processes from the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Her interest includes ecological study of wildlife; biodiversity and habitat conservation; forest assessment such as high conservation value (HCV) and environmental impact assessment (EIA); as well as environmental education. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D in forestry at the Faculty of Tropical Forestry, UMS on Bornean orangutan study. This project aims to gain new insights on the current population density estimates of Bornean orangutan in Danum Valley, their diet especially the plant species preferences to help in formulating a balance diet for species husbandry and finally, determining the health of existing population using the gut microbiome technique.
